Description

Neurotransmitter levels and number, and the affinity of their receptors, and the activity of their metabolic enzymes undergo modest changes circumscribed to specific brain structures and individual neurotransmitter systems. Neurotransmitter activity in hippocampus for acetylcholine, in the substratia nigra and the stratial pathway for dopamin, in portions of the brain stem for norepinepherine and serotonin, and in the thalamus for gamma-aminobutyric acid. Changes in neurotransmitter levels are often paralleled by changes in both the number of receptors and their binding affinity.
