Description

Carbohydrate homeostasis deficits are evident following a glucose challenge, or glucose tolerance test. The rate at which blood glucose returns to normal is decreased with ageing. The glucose uptake vs. insulin dose-response curve is shifted to the right; this is associated with a decrease in sensitivity of peripheral tissues to insulin; this is not associated with decreased released/circulating insulin, nor changes in insulin receptor number/quality.
