Description

Elderly individuals can exhibit deficits in the intestinal mucosal immune responses. The mechanisms are unclear but Arranz et al. found higher immunoglobulin A (IgA) plasma cell counts and lower intraepithelial lymphocyte counts in jejunal biopsy specimens in elderly subjects compared to younger controls.
