Description
Permeability glycoprotein (P-gp) activity is decreased in health elderly subjects vs. younger controls. P-gp is an ABC (ATP-binding cassette) transporter involved in transporting compounds out of cells. This decrease in P-gp activity could be related to medications, inflammation and toxins in the brain parenchyma that may contribute to delirium.
